DREW SANDERS Head Football Coach, Athletic Coordinator

Coach Sanders Drew Sanders grew up in Mexia, Texas, played for the Blackcats and earned a District Championship his final year and Second Team All-District honors and Team Captain. Upon graduation, he earned a four-year academic scholarship and attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX where he played football and coached. During that time, he was part of four Conference Championship teams. He graduated with a Major in Kinesiology and Minor in English. He was also three time Academic All-Conference.

After graduating from Hardin-Simmons, Coach Sanders coached in Mexia and Killeen, prior to going to San Antonio Taft High School. While in San Antonio as an assistant, his teams made the AAAAA play-offs four of five years and went to the AAAAA State Championship in 2001 and the Quarterfinals in 2004. At that same time, he earned a Master’s degree in Education Administration from Texas A&M Kingsville. Coach Sanders was also part of the coaching staff selected to coach in the THSCA All-Star Game in the summer of 2005. During that time, he helped open up a brand-new school called Stevens High School prior to being offered the Head Coaching job at Wm. B. Travis High School in Austin, TX. Before Coach Sanders’ arrival in 2006, the Travis Rebels had a 2-8 record and two sub-varsity teams with 1-9 records and two varsity 0-10 seasons within the past five years. Upon completion of the 2008 season, The Rebels had only the second play-off appearance in the past 10 years and 16 wins, the most combined wins in a three year period in almost 20 years. During that same time period, the Rebels were awarded the Austin Downtown Lions’ Club “Sportsmanship of the Year” Award, while Coach Sanders earned the “Educator of the Year” Award and was guest speaker at Austin F.C.A.’s (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) yearly banquet. The Rebels also increased participation by almost 200% and had over 60% of their varsity team earn Academic All-District.

Since Coach Sanders arrival to the Four Points area in 2009, he has led the Vandegrift Vipers to unprecedented success. Since the inception of the program, the Vipers have 26 varsity program wins, a Area Finalist finish in 2011, and 2013 and 146 program wins. The football Vipers currently boast a 66% program winning percentage since their arrival on the Austin football scene. In addition to a winning on the football field, the Vipers also have an emphasis on being involved in their local community. On a yearly basis, they read to local elementary children through their “Viper Reader” program, assist the teachers with a teacher luncheon, and build wheelchair ramps for the home-bound in project they call “Build a ramp.” Through putting others first and working hard in the classroom and on the field, the Viper football program is busy building men of honor. Coach Sanders was also recently elected to the T.H.S.C.A. (Texas High School Coaches’ Association) Board of Regional Directors. He is currently Director Elect for Region 8.

Coach Sanders has been married to Janet for 16 years, and has three children (Matthew 13, Caleb 10, and Sadie 6) and they live in the Four Points area.

CHAD ALDRICH Head Boys Soccer Coach, Head Four Points Middle School Soccer Coach

Coach Aldrich Chad Aldrich grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Southwest High School in 2000. As an athlete of many sports, he became the 1999/2000 San Antonio Male Christian Athlete of the year along with 6 different Athlete of the Week awards from a variety of news and radio stations. Chad went on to graduate from Texas A&M University in 2005 with a major in Kinesiology and minors in mathematics and athletic training. During his career at A&M, he worked closely with Soccer Coach G. Guerrieri and R.C. Slocum in football as a trainer.

Coach Aldrich was previously the 1st Assistant at Pflugerville High School with the men's soccer team. He was part of one of the biggest local soccer turn-arounds in recent history at Pflugerville High School. Under his guidance, the Pflugerville soccer program went from a winless team in district play to AAAAA Bi-District Finalist in 2009. The soccer team also had only a 40% passing rate in the classroom the first year and before leaving, 100% completing his fourth year. Participation greatly increased going from only having two competition teams to four including a middle school soccer program that did not exist before. As an assistant football coach, his teams made the play-offs for 3 of the 4 years including 2 district championships and contended in the AAAAA State finals in 2007. Three kickers during that time went to go on and played D1 ball.

Chad has been with Vandegrift High School since it was opened in 2009 as the head soccer coach. The first soccer senior class of 2012 finished as 5-Time Champions including 51-AAAA District Champions and Regional Quarter-Final Champions inside the Top 16 in Texas soccer. The 2013 squad finished 2nd in district play and Bi-District Champions. Chad not only coaches the high school men’s team, but also is lucky enough to be able to coach the Four Points Middle School soccer team as well. During the summers, he helps trains with camps at UT ladies soccer and is involved with 4th-6th grade soccer development in Steiner Ranch and River Place community.

Balancing between God, family, and soccer, he has the world in his hands with his son, Chase Christian Aldrich born in April 2010.

CARLEE BAUER Assistant Swim Coach

Coach Bauer Carlee Bauer is excited to join the Vandegrift High School coaching staff as an assistant swimming coach for the Vipers while teaching Chemistry and Pre-AP Chemistry. She is an Austin native who took a minor detour into the piney woods of Texas and the Houston metro area for a few years but is happily back in what she considers her homeland. Swimming is something she has been passionate about since before her high school swimming career at Leander High School. She was a four year letterman and team captain her senior year for LHS back when Leander only had one high school for the whole district. She swam individual medley as well as the fly and back stroke. She was also part of the 200 medley relay, in addition to both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, making all district and regional several times in both individual events and relays. After graduating from Sam Houston State in Huntsville with a biology degree and chemistry minor, she worked in the biotech field for three years before moving back to Austin area to make a meaningful career change to teaching. She coached club swimming in Cedar Park for approximately three years and has been teaching science for six years now. As much as she enjoyed being in the water competing, she found that she loved coaching swimmers and pushing them to success from the pool deck even more enjoyable and looks forward to this year.

LINDA BOWMAN Athletic Trainer

Bowman Linda Bowman was born and raised in San Benito, Texas and graduated from Rio Hondo High School. She then attended Texas A & M University in Kingsville where she was a student athletic trainer and worked with the Division 2 National Runner-up football team as well as the volleyball and women’s basketball teams. After graduating from TAMUK, she took the Assistant Athletic Trainer job at Kingsville HS where she worked for 2 years before taking the Head Athletic Trainer job at Kingsville HS for 1 year. She then took a year off from athletic training with the birth of her twin sons and moved to the Austin area with her husband and taught Physical Education at Sacred Heart Catholic School. A year later she was offered an athletic trainer position at Stony Point HS in Round Rock where she worked for the past 13 years prior to coming to Vandegrift HS. While working at SPHS, she was on staff the 3 years the football team was a state semi-finalist as well as working with the countless other playoff teams at SPHS. At the same time she was working as an athletic trainer at SPHS and teaching Sports Medicine classes, she attended Concordia University and earned her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and has also passed the Principal certification exam.

Linda is married to David Bowman who is also an athletic trainer in LISD. He works at Cedar Park HS where their 14 year old twins, Charles and William will be incoming freshmen this year. They also have an 8 year old daughter, Kabrina who will be starting 3rd grade at River Place Elementary.

SARAH BUHIDMA Assistant Tennis Coach

Coach Buhidma Coach Buhidma grew up in Richardson, Texas. In high school she lettered in volleyball, basketball, softball, cross country, and track. After high school, she entered Austin College, in Sherman, Texas, where she played volleyball and majored in Latin and English, and minored in Philosophy. Her senior year she began coaching at a local private school. Upon graduating from AC, she continued coaching and began teaching high school social studies. She served as the varsity volleyball coach, and assisted with basketball and track. Her volleyball team made it to the playoffs and one of her former players now plays for Texas Christian University. Her basketball team qualified for the State Finals in 2006 and won the State Championship in 2007. The track team she helped coached sent several runners to the State Meets in both 2006 and 2007.

In 2007, she moved to Austin and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her secondary certification in Latin. This is her second year at Vandegrift High School. She teaches Latin and serves as the assistant coach for the regional qualifying tennis team.

GREG COOPER Head Wrestling Coach, Football Offensive Coordinator

Coach Cooper Greg Cooper was hired in a dual role as the Head Wrestling Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Vandegrift Vipers. Previous to being hired in LISD, Greg was the Head Wrestling Coach for Austin Travis. He resurrected a nearly non-existent program taking them from next to last in district to District 28 Runner-up for 2007 and 2008, losing only to Austin Bowie. During those two years, he also qualified 17 wrestlers for the Regional Wrestling Meet held in San Antonio, TX. His current coaching record is 66-24-4. The program at VHS has grown from 28 wrestlers in the first year to over 60 this year. The program is currently carrying two varsity teams. Greg also was an avid wrestler as a young athlete in Michigan City, Indiana from the 6th-12th grade.

As a 23 year veteran of coaching, Greg has been part of many championship teams including the AAAAA Football State Finalist in 2001 and Quarterfinalist in 2004. This past year the Vipers reached the Area Finals and averaged 33 points a game. Coach Cooper’s offense has constantly improved and set many school records this past season.

Also in the track arena, he has coached a State Champion 200M runner and many State qualifiers. Greg was also awarded the C.T.F.C.A. Offensive Asst. Coach of the Year in 2007 for his offense at Travis High School. His offense set several school records and averaged 31 points per game. He has also coached two 2,000 yard rushers in his career.

Greg is married to Norma Cooper who teaches at Westside Elementary and has one daughter, Dakota who is a senior in high school and lives in Oregon.

JE'RON CURTIS Football Assistant Coach, Boy's Basketball Assistant Coach

Coach Curtis Coach Curtis grew up in Killeen, Texas and graduated from Killeen High School. Coach Curtis played football at Killeen High and earned a scholarship to continue his football career at West Texas A&M University. Coach Curtis graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in English. He worked at Wells Fargo bank for two years before he decided to pursue his passion for teaching and coaching. He has 5 years of teaching and coaching experience. His first year was at Shoemaker High School as a freshmen football and basketball coach. Shoemaker made the bi-district playoffs in football and basketball that year. His second year was at Austin High School as a varsity running backs coach, J.V. football coach, and freshmen basketball coach. Coach Curtis currently teaches Communication Applications and A.V.I.D. He coaches the varsity running backs, Special Teams, freshmen football and freshmen basketball. Coach Curtis and his wife Farren Curtis have a baby boy named Braylen Jace Curtis.

KIM DAVIES Head Swim Coach

Coach Davies Kimberly Davies grew up in Cedar Park, Texas and graduated from Cedar Park High school. She was a member of the swim team and played lacrosse. Kimberly went on to graduate from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois with a Bachelors of Science in Applied Health Sciences. During her time in college Kimberly played lacrosse and was a member of the water polo team. Her junior and senior years she served as team co-captain and helped lead the water polo team to an 8th place finish at nationals. During the off-season Kimberly worked as a physical therapist’s assistant where she studied how to prevent and treat common sports-related injuries.

After graduating from Wheaton College, Kimberly completed her Masters in Exercise Physiology from The University of Texas at Austin. During her time at UT she served as a nutrition specialist for the UT cheerleading, pom, and mascot squads. Additionally, she taught the lab portion of two undergraduate kinesiology classes and served as an intern for Train 4 the Game, a sport-specific strength and conditioning center.

Since graduation, Kimberly has taught chemistry and PreAP chemistry at Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas. After the birth of her daughter, Kimberly moved back to Austin and now teaches Chemistry and AP Environmental Science at Vandegrift. In her free time, Kimberly enjoys hanging out with her husband and 14 month old daughter Ava.

CLIFF ELLIS Head Boys Basketball Coach

Coach Ellis Coach Cliff Ellis was born and raised in Plano, TX and graduated from Plano East Senior High School where he played basketball and baseball. Coach Ellis then went on to school at Texas A&M University and completed his graduation requirements in 2000 and then went on to complete his Master's degree from Texas State University in 2008. As an assistant coach, his teams qualified for the post-season every season for 10 years and during his last season as 1st Asst. at Lake Travis, qualified for the Regional Finals. In his 1st year as the Vandegrift head coach, Ellis guided an all sophomore team to the 3A state playoffs – the first team sport to ever to reach the state playoffs in school history. He again led the vipers to post season play at the 4A level in 2012.

Coach Ellis has also coached golf, cross country, football and has several athletes qualify for the post-season and state honors. In 2007, Ellis was honored as the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Assistant Coach of the Year. In addition to his award from TABC he has also served as 3A all-state selection committee member (2009), 4A all-region selection committee (2010 and 2012) and outstanding coach selection committee (2010). He also was named an assistant coach in the Dennis Johnson Central Texas All-Star Basketball games in 2007 and 2008.

Currently living in the Cedar Park area, Cliff is married to Alisa Ellis and they have a 4 year old son named Carter, a 2 year old black lab named Jagger, and are expecting a little girl, Ainsley, in December.

ZAC EREKSON Assistant Football Coach

Coach Erekson Coach Erekson comes to Vandegrift from Mapleton, Utah and will be coaching the corner backs. Coach Erekson is entering his 6th year as a teacher and coach. Prior to coming to Vandegrift Coach Erekson had spent time coaching in Utah and in Texas. While in Texas Coach Erekson was the RB coach at Giddings High School, and the WR coach at Abilene-Cooper. While at Giddings Coach Erekson coached All-district running back Joseph Glenn, who now plays at UH. At Giddings Glenn rushed for over 1,000 yards 3 years in a row. While at Abilene Cooper Coach Erekson coached WR Lorenzo Joe to an All-State selection as a sophomore, as well as becoming UT’s first sophomore commit in the Mack Brown era.

Prior to his coaching career beginning, Coach Erekson played college football at BYU. While at BYU he was part the Cougars Mountain West Conference Championship teams. Coach Erekson graduated from BYU with a degree in broadcast journalism. Coach Erekson received his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from APU.

In high school Coach Erekson was a 4 sport athlete playing football, basketball, baseball and track. Coach won State titles in basketball, baseball and track. Coach Erekson has been married to Juli for 7 years and they have a beautiful daughter and are expecting a new son in January.

RENEE GRUMBLES Assistant Girls Basketall, Assistant Girls Track

Coach Grumbles Renee Grumbles was born and raised in the Austin area. She graduated from Lake Travis High School, where she participated in volleyball, cross country, basketball and softball. Renee lettered in both basketball and softball, as a sophomore starter. After graduation, Grumbles spent her freshmen year at Texas A&M Corpus Christi and transferred to Texas State University where she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Respiratory Care.

Coach Grumbles began her teaching and coaching career at Marble Falls High School. While at Marble Falls, she coached JV basketball all three years and throughout the years, assisted in volleyball, softball and track .This year at Vandegrift, Renee will be coaching JV basketball and assisting in Track, while teaching World History and American Government. As of August 2013, Grumbles has begun pursuing her Master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration through Concordia University-Irvine.

JENIFER HARDY Head Girl's Soccer Coach, Cross Country Assistant Coach

Coach Hardy Jenifer Hardy, an Austin native, came to Leander ISD from Kerrville Tivy High School where she had been assisting the girls varsity and heading the JV soccer team with a playoff berth in 2009. She has also been head coach of the middle school and high school girls' cross-country teams. Jenifer grew up in Eanes ISD, where she attended Westlake High School. She played both club and high school soccer, obtaining an area ODP (Olympic Development Program) spot her senior year. After high school, Jenifer went to play for Schreiner University in Kerrville where she majored in Exercise Science. During her time at SU, Jenifer was awarded All-Division and All-Conference honors three of four years, along with setting all of Schreiner's offensive records for season and career, most of which she still holds. As well as having a successful soccer career she also had success in the classroom with Dean's list, President's list and Academic All-Conference honors.

So far in her career with Vandegrift soccer, the team has advanced to play offs each year in at least 3rd place or higher. In 2012 the team finished as undefeated District Champs. Last year, Lady Vipers Soccer and made it to sectionals. In sectionals we met and eventually fell to our LISD neighboring rival, Cedar Park, in a very intense and well played match. Coach Hardy is excited for the upcoming season and looks forward to continued success with the Viper soccer program.

MIKE HEATH Football Assistant Coach, Wrestling Assistant Coach

Coach Heath Michael Heath grew up in Austin, TX and graduated from Pflugerville High School in 1993. While in high school, he played football and baseball and participated in power lifting and track. Coach Heath went on to graduate from Texas A&M University in 1999 with a major in Kinesiology. During his career at A&M, he was a member of the Corps of Cadets in which he served as a Battalion Commander his senior year. Also, while at A&M, Coach Heath enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in which he served with 1st Battalion 23rd Marines as an infantry man from 1995-1997.

Coach Heath started his coaching career at Bryan High School in 1997 as a volunteer coach. Upon graduation from A&M in 1999, Coach Heath was hired as a freshman football coach and varsity assistant at Galena Park High School in the Houston area. In 2001, he moved backed to Austin where he coached varsity football and wrestling at Anderson High School from 2001-2004. He then coached at Hill Country Christian School of Austin from 2004-2008. During that time, he had the opportunity to coach in the TAPPS State Semi-Finals in 2005. After 1 year at Farley Middle School in Hutto, TX in 2008, Coach Heath received the varsity defensive ends and head wrestling job at Austin High in 2009. In the summer of 2010, Coach Heath earned his master’s degree in Science Education from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. It was also in 2010 that Coach Heath was hired at Vandegrift High School to coach defensive ends and assist with junior varsity football and also assist with the Viper wrestling program. In just two short years, Coach Heath has seen the football program make it to the second round of the 4A state football playoffs and has watched the wrestling program grow to over 70 wrestlers and become a competitive force in the toughest wrestling district in Central, TX. Coach Heath has been married to Stephanie from Pflugerville, TX for over 16 years and has three children: Haleigh-14, Brayson-9, and Addie-Mykel-8.

KEVIN HELM Head Cross Country Coach

Coach Helm Kevin Helm was born in Waco, TX, and spent his elementary through high school years living in Waco, Houston, Austin, and finally Oklahoma. Kevin started running around his Houston neighborhood in 5th grade after watching other runners, and he never stopped. He also played basketball and soccer growing up, but a high school coach suggested he stick with running in 11th grade.

Kevin ran varsity cross-country and track his junior and senior years at Moore High School where his cross-country team finished 3rd in STATE his senior year.

Kevin graduated High School from Moore, OK in 1990, and graduated from The University of Central Oklahoma in 1994.
  • 1996 - 1998: 7th grade English Teacher at Byrd Middle School; Head Cross-Country/Track Coach & English IV teacher at Carrollton Christian Academy;
    1 individual STATE Champion, 2 district titles, and State team qualifier both years.
  • 2000 - 2012: Hebron High School; 1 individual STATE Champion; 4 District titles, numerous Regional and State qualifiers.

    • August 2007: Survived West Nile/Viral meningitis; Running saved his life!

  • Kevin has completed 9 marathons, including Boston 2004 & Boston 2009.
  • 2010 to 2012: Kevin's 12 person relay team Dollz and Towel Boys finished 2nd out of 150+ teams all 3 years in the 203 mile Texas Independence Relay!
Kevin lives in Georgetown with his wife Yaneth, daughter Ximena, Lab Sugar, and baby Victoria will be here in October. When not coaching or reading, you can find Kevin running around Town Lake with his yellow lab Sugar.

SCOTT HERMES Track Assistant Coach

Coach Hermes Scott Hermes grew up and attended high school in Muenster Texas. While at Muenster, Scott participated in football, basketball, track and golf. He was Honorable Mention All-State in Football and finished 8th in the State Golf Tournament his senior year.

After graduating from Texas Tech University in 2002, Coach Hermes began working at Sanger High School. He was employed there for 11 years. Coach Hermes was the secondary coach for 5 years and the defensive coordinator for the final 6. The Sanger Indians made the state playoffs 7 times, advancing to the State Quarterfinals once. Coach Hermes was also the Head Boys and Girls Golf Coach.

This is Coach Hermes’ first year at Vandegrift HS. He teaches US History and World Geography. Coach Hermes’ beautiful wife Kim, is a teacher at Canyon Ridge Middle School. They have 2 children, Daegen (5) and Ridley (2).

Sarah Holub Assistant Volleyball Coach

Coach Holub Sarah Holub was raised in Waller Texas. In high school she played volleyball, track, and softball. Her junior and senior year of playing softball she was named team captain. Other accomplishments include MVP, offensive player of the year and softball academic all state. Sarah received both athletic and academic scholarship to play NCAA division two softball for University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Her junior year she helped her team to becoming co-conference champs. In the following year, Incarnate Word Softball won their first ever Lone Star conference tournament. Accomplishments in college include Lone Star Commissioner’s Honor Roll and All Tournament Catcher in Lone Star conference tournament. Upon graduating Sarah received her Bachelor’s of Science in mathematics and a minor in kinesiology. She is currently pursuing her masters in secondary education though Texas State University.

WENDY HUBER Head Softball Coach, Girl's Athletic Coordinator

Coach Huber Wendy Huber was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. In high school she lettered in track, volleyball, and softball. Coming out of high school, she was recruited to play softball in college at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. While at UIW, she played for four years earning honors such as NAIA All-Region, All-Heart of Texas Conference (HOTC) and HOTC Academic Excellence. Shortly after graduation from UIW, she started teaching and coaching in the San Antonio area. While in her first year of teaching and coaching she attended Texas State University in San Marcos to earn her Master’s Degree. She has been teaching and coaching for 13 years and is currently in her 10th year as a Head Softball Coach.

While at Vandegrift she has developed the softball program from the ground up. The softball program has become more successful every year. The 2012 Softball Season was the most successful yet with, an increase in the number of wins from the 2011 season. With players getting stronger and having more experience, the 2014 season looks to be an exciting year!

REBECCA HUDSON Head Tennis Coach

Coach Hudson Coach Hudson grew up in Iowa City, Iowa. In high school she lettered in tennis, volleyball, and softball and played junior tennis since the age of 9. After graduation from high school, she played tennis her freshman year for the University of Northern Colorado and was the Continental Divide Conference champion at #4 singles. Coach Hudson then transferred to the University of Iowa and played tennis for the Hawkeyes for the next three years under Coach Micki Schillig and the team reached a rank of third in the Big 10. She majored in History with a minor in English as well as participated in a study abroad program at the University of London. After undergraduate school, Coach Hudson earned her Master of Science degree from Western Illinois University in Sport Management/Athletic Administration as well as coached the Macomb High School boys tennis team. She followed this with four years of coaching boys and girls tennis, serving as the Director of Admissions and teaching world history in West Hills, CA at Chaminade College Preparatory. The Chaminade girls tennis team were the 2000 co-conference champions and several of her players went on to play collegiate tennis.

In 2002 she moved to Austin with her husband, Roy, who is an Administrator at Lake Travis High School. They have three children, Cooper, 6 and Lauren and Julia, 5. This is her fourth year at Vandegrift High School where she teaches Advanced Placement World History.

ROBERT IRWIN Assistant Secondary Coach, Assistant Girl's Soccer Coach

Coach Irwin Robert Irwin graduated from Cedar Park High School in 2003 where he played Varsity Football and Varsity Tennis. Upon graduation, he joined the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M where he earned membership in the prestigious Ross Volunteer Company. Robert graduated from A&M with a Bachelor’s of Science in Political Science and has been coaching football and soccer at Four Points Middle School for the last two years. Here at Vandegrift, Robert will act as the assistant secondary coach as well as the assistant girls soccer coach.

JUDD JACKSON Assistant Football & Assistant Baseball Coach

Coach Jackson Judd Jackson grew up in Amarillo, TX. He graduated from Palo Duro High School in 2002. He was a multi-sport athlete for the Dons. He played Quarterback and was voted Captain for the Dons’ 2001 record-setting season. He earned Honorable Mention All-District Honors and Academic All-State awards while leading the Dons to their first district championship in over 10 years and ultimately a state quarterfinals appearance finishing 11-2 in 2001. He was a four-year letterman for the Dons’ baseball team. He played second base during the Dons’ first playoff run in school history as a freshman during the 1999 season. In 2002 he was voted Captain for the Don Baseball team and earned All-District Honors for infield play hitting .319 with 9 HRs.

Coach Jackson graduated from West Texas A&M University in 2007 with a B.S. in Composite Social Studies. Upon graduation he was hired at his high school alma mater and continued teaching and coaching at Palo Duro under long time coach Steve Parr for the next 4 years. His football teams went to the playoffs 3 of his 4 years coaching at Palo Duro. He has coached multiple All-District, collegiate athletes as well as an MLB draft pick. He helped improve the baseball teams’ fielding percentage, batting average, team ERA, and winning percentage at Palo Duro.

Coach Jackson comes to Vandegrift for the 2011 football season. He is assistant coach in both Football and Baseball. He has a son, Ethan, that was born in 2003.

Coach Jones Coach Jones is entering his 6th year of coaching. This is his 2nd year at Vandegrift. He has spent the 4 previous years in Belton ISD at Belton High School: 1 year as the head freshmen coach and 3 years as the head JV coach. Coach Jones graduated from Panhandle High School, where he excelled in basketball as an All Region athlete, and in tennis as an All-State athlete. He also participated in football, golf, cross country and track during his high school career. He then went to Howard Payne University where he played tennis his freshmen year, and also worked with the Division 3 National Championship winning Women’s Basketball Program.

Coach Jones loves to spend time with his family, play golf and work out. His beautiful wife of 6 years, Bridget, is currently working from home and is able to spend lots of time with their 16 month old daughter, Rylin Faith.

AUSTIN MATTHEWS Athletic Trainer

Coach Matthews Austin Matthews was born and raised in McAllen, Texas where he attended Sharyland High School. After graduating in 2005, he attended Graceland University on a golf scholarship where he competed in the 2005-2006 school year. He moved to San Antonio, Texas to attend UTSA the following year where received his Bachelor of Science with a focus in Exercise Science in 2009. A few months after graduation, he had the desire to return to school to further his education . Completing the requirements for application, he was accepted into Stephen F. Austin State University’s Accredited Master’s Program. There he worked under nationally recognized Athletic Trainers and assisted with the football, baseball, men’s basketball, cross country/track, and softball teams. In his final Fall semester he focused most of his attention to the Lufkin High School football teams. There he attended every Freshman/Junior Varsity home game and then assisted with every Varsity football game. He was fortunate enough to travel with the varsity team as they made it to Regional 5A playoffs.

KELLY MCCARTER Head Volleyball Coach, Assistant Track Coach

Coach McCarter Kelly McCarter grew up in Kerrville, TX, and graduated from Tivy High School. At Tivy, she lettered in volleyball, basketball, and track. Kelly earned a scholarship to play volleyball at the University of Arkansas. At Arkansas, she was a 3-time SEC All-Academic team selection and she helped her team to two NCAA tournament appearances. Kelly went on to graduate with a major in Kinesiology, and then chose to further her education with a masters in adult and higher education at the University of Oklahoma. Due to a red-shirt year, Kelly had one more year of eligibility and was asked by OU coaching staff to play one more year as a Sooner. McCarter found an opportunity to fulfill the young team’s need and play her fourth year for the Sooners, while at the same time having her first year of graduate school paid for. At Oklahoma, Kelly was a team captain and a Big 12 All-Academic team selection. She went on to work as a graduate assistant in the OU Strength and Conditioning department, where she had the opportunity to work with many of the OU sports teams.

Kelly began her coaching career as the varsity assistant volleyball coach at Frisco Centennial High School. After two years at Centennial, McCarter left to be the head coach at Weatherford High School. The year before Kelly was hired the Weatherford volleyball team finished last in district with one district win. McCarter was hired in 2007, and she led the team to a 2nd place finish in district and an overall record of 25-12. She was also named the 2007 District 3-5A Coach of the Year. She compiled a 90-64 overall record at Weatherford and led her teams to the playoffs three out of four years.

Kelly is entering her third season as the head coach volleyball coach at Vandegrift. In the 2012 season she helped lead the Lady Vipers to their best overall record of 29-12 and first ever playoff appearance. Kelly’s second sport is track and she teaches A.P. United States history.

ANDY McCLAIN Football Assistant Coach, Soccer Assistant Coach

Coach McClain Coach Andy McClain joined the Vandegrift Viper Community in the Spring of 2010 with his wife, Erika. The McClain’s recently had a baby girl, Melanie Grace, born in May 2013. Coach McClain grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated from Westwood High School where he played football, soccer, and ran track and cross country. He was an All-District and Academic All-State student-athlete while at Westwood and was also inducted into the National High School Football Hall of Fame at the end of his senior season.

Coach McClain then played football and graduated from Wheaton College (Chicago, Illinois). During Coach McClain's college career, the Thunder football team won multiple Conference Championships, traveled into the playoffs, and reached the Division III National Semi-Finals. Coach also has a Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University in Irvine, California.

Coach McClain is an assistant football and soccer coach at Vandegrift. He is currently Varsity Special Teams Co-Coordinator, Wide Receiver and Kickers coach, and Freshmen Black Team Offensive Coordinator.

BLAKE MOUSER Assistant Football Coach, Assistant Softball Coach

Coach Mouser Blake Mouser grew up in Blanco, TX and graduated from Blanco High School in 2004. In high school, Blake lettered in football and baseball, including being part of the football program that won the Class 2A Division I State Championship in 2001 and State Finalist in 2000.

After high school, Blake attended Texas A&M University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in History and Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. He took his first job in Temple, TX coaching at Bonham Middle School coaching football, basketball and track. After one year, he moved up to Temple High School and became an assistant offensive line coach, along with coaching basketball, softball, and soccer over the next three years.

Blake began working at VHS in May of 2013 and along with coaching football, will be an assistant softball coach and teach PE and Health.

SARAH PETERS Girls Assistant Soccer Coach

Coach Peters Sarah grew up in Saginaw, Michigan and moved to Austin in October of 2011. She graduated from Heritage High School where she played volleyball for two years and lettered all four years in soccer and tennis. She was appointed soccer and tennis team captain her junior and senior years.

Her freshman year she was a member of the 2002 Division 1 Soccer State Championship team. During her years of playing, she received First Team All-Conference and First Team All Regional honors. Her academic achievements earned her selection to the All-Academic Team Honors in soccer and tennis, as well as the Principal's Honor Roll for all four years. Sarah was named a Distinguished Achievements, Daughters of the American Revolution -DRA Good Citizen and Who's Who Among American High School Students.

After high school, Sarah was awarded a scholarship to Saginaw Valley State University to play Women's Soccer. Her freshman year she was named Second Team all GLIAC and also earned Academic Conference Honors during her four years of soccer.

Academically Sarah was on the Dean's & President's List and graduated with Cum Laude Honors with a BA in Education.

Throughout high school and college she has coached soccer teams and at soccer camps. In the spring of 2011 she was the Junior Varsity Girls’ Soccer Coach at Heritage High School. In the fall of 2011, she was an Assistant Coach for the Women's Varsity Soccer team at SVSU.

Upon graduation, Sarah taught during the 2010-2011 school year for Freeland Schools, Freeland MI. Also, last school year 2011-2012 she taught at Cedars Montessori School, Austin.

She is happy and excited to be teaching and coaching at Vandergrift.

ANDY PETERSON Assistant Wrestling Coach

Coach Peterso n Andy Peterson grew up in Southern California where he wrestled in high school and college. Prior to joining the Vandegrift High School staff in 2012, Andy coached 16 years of high school and college wrestling in California, North Dakota and Virginia including 3 years as a high school head coach and 3 years as an assistant at the University of North Dakota.

Andy has a B.A. in History from San Diego State University, a B.S. in Social Science from the University of North Dakota and an MS in Education from National University.

Andy is married to Andi Ault and they have four children, Brent, a 2014 state qualifier and class of 2014 Vandegrift, Aaron, class of 2017, Erika, class of 2022 and Emma, class of 2024.

MICHAEL REYNOLDS Assistant Football Coach

Coach Reynolds Coach Reynolds graduated from Texas State University in 2007. He has been a varsity football coach, assistant and head track coach, and assistant wrestling coach.

As an athlete, Coach Reynolds played fullback at San Antonio Taft High School. He was part of a football program that played in the AAAAA Division I State Finals in 2001 and made the playoffs the next two years including his senior season. In high school Mike earned Academic All-State honors his senior year. Upon graduation Coach Reynolds enrolled at Texas State University where he majored in mathematics and minored in coaching athletics. While still in school, Mike volunteered at Austin Travis High School for two years before being hired. In 2008 the Rebels were AAAA Division II Bi-district Finalists. As a Head Track coach in 2009, Coach Reynolds had several athletes qualify for the AAAA Region IV track meet including the district 26-AAAA champion in the 100-meter dash. Coach Reynolds has been at Vandegrift since it opened in 2009.

Coach Reynolds has been happily married to Jessica since June 2009. They have 1 son, Jackson Lee Reynolds, born in November 2011.

CHRIS SEAMAN Head Baseball Coach

Coach Seaman Coach Seaman comes to Vandegrift High School after previously having coached baseball and football for eight years at Georgetown High School. Coach Seaman also coached one year at Texas State University with Ty Harrington in 2000 before coming to Georgetown High School in 2001.

Coach Seaman graduated high school from Georgetown in 1996. He was an All-District and All-Centex Quarterback 95-96 and All State punter in 1996. He lettered three years (1994-95-96) in baseball as a catcher. He earned All-Centex 95-96 and All District 94-95-96. His baseball team lost to eventual State Champion Klein Oak in 1996 in 3rd round of playoffs.

After graduating from Georgetown High, he lettered four years at Texas State University in baseball under coaches Howard Bushong and Ty Harrington. He was awarded All-Southland Conference catcher 1998-99-00. He was voted team captain 1999 and 2000 and named to Rawlings All-Regional team in 1999. Coach Seaman currently ranks second all-time in career batting average at Texas State (.399 ave.) and games played (185). Between 1997-2000, he collected three Southland Conference championship rings. He was also named Southland Conference All-Tournament team 98-99-00. He holds the Texas State record for caught stealing against average for a catcher. During four years playing at Texas State, his teams defeated every team in the Big 12 South at least once. Coach Seaman graduated in 2001 with an Exercise and Sports Science degree.

Upon finishing college, Coach Seaman signed to play one season in Albany, New York for the Albany Diamond Dogs of the Northern League Eastern Division as a catcher. For the last four years the Vandegrift Baseball team has continued to make strides becoming a competitive program in district 25AAAA.

Chris is married to his awesome wife Brooke Seaman and resides in Cedar Park with his boys Tyler Seaman8, Reese Seaman 6, and Jayson Long 19, and 2 cats Easton and Ranger.

Coach Seaman Coach Wernecke is entering his 10th year as a high school golf coach and his 4th year as the head boys/girls coach at Vandegrift HS. He was a 1998 graduate of Wharton HS and a 2001 graduate of Sam Houston State University, with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. While at Sam Houston, he played on the men's golf team. Matt has guided his teams to 35 top 3 finishes and 15 team titles through the years. While at Vandegrift, he has guided his teams to 8 team titles; including District titles for both the boys and girls teams in 2010, the Regional Championship for the girls in 2013 and both the boys and girls teams advancing to State in 2013 (boys 3rd place/girls 7th place). He has also helped guide his players to 3 individual titles and 3 inidividuals qualifying for the Regional Tournament.

Matt also continues to play competitive golf during his free time and has played in a handful of local, state and national events. These inlcude: the U.S. Public Links Championship (2003), Texas State Amateur (2007, 2011, 2012) and Texas State Mid-Amateur (2007, 2013). Coach Wernecke won the 2010 Austin Men’s City Championship, the 2012 Teravista Open and was chosen to compete in the 2010 Hannon Cup. He currently carries a handicap of +2.4

Matt has three beautiful daughters, Avery (14), Masyn (9) and Evy (7). He was recently married to Amy Willis of Austin, TX.

JULIE WILKE Head Girls Basketball Coach, Assistant Track Coach

Coach Wilke Julie Wilke enters her second season at the helm of the Vandegrift Lady Viper girl’s basketball program. Additionally, Wilke will serve as an ACE/Health teacher at Vandegrift. Wilke entered the high school ranks during the 2011-2012 school year as the head junior varsity / assistant varsity girl’s basketball coach and assistant softball coach at Stony Point HS in Round Rock. Prior to Stony Point, Wilke was the assistant women’s basketball and assistant track and field coach at Southwestern University in Georgetown from 2007-2011. From 2003-2004 Wilke completed two seasons as the girl’s basketball coach at Durand Junior High School in Durand, IL, her hometown.

Outside of the coaching ranks, Wilke worked in the private sector as a project manager for NuStats, a survey research firm based in Austin from 2006-2008. In 2006, she received a Master of Science degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas - Austin.

Coach Wilke is a 2002 graduate of Beloit College in Beloit, WI where she was a standout three-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and track & field. Her accomplishments in track & field include two school records in sprint relays and two-time All-Conference recognition for her performance in the javelin. On the hardwood, Wilke was a three-time All-Conference selection and is currently fifth in school history in points scored and fourth in made 3-pointers. Wilke also has the unique distinction of having played full-contact women’s football. From 2004-2008 Wilke spent four seasons as quarterback of the Austin Outlaws, one of the longest running women’s football franchises in the country.

GARY ZERNOW Football Defensive Coordinator, Track Assistant Coach

Coach Zernow Gary Zernow grew up in Dearborn Heights, Michigan and graduated from Crestwood in 1976. Gary attended Olivet College in Michigan and lettered 4 years in football. He took his first coaching job in Dickinson, Texas working from the Jr. High ranks to a varsity assistant under the tutelage of Dub Farris. Later working under Mike Honeycutt in Seguin, RR Westwood and finally Pflugerville HS, including a 2 year stint as Head Football Coach in Thrall Texas. Returning to Pflugerville in 2001, he had the honor of calling the defense in the 2007 State championship game vs Katy HS.

Gary signed on with the Vipers in its opening season in Aug of 2009.

Gary's family includes Debbie Zernow and daughter Toni who graduated from Pflugerville HS in 2010.
